Beauty Fades, Kindness Stays

My grandmother had been a very beautiful young woman. Unfortunately, by the time I was born (and she was only 46) the battering of a lifetime’s worth of sunshine and seas salt had etched deep wrinkles in her face. But the Sicilian proverbs she had inherited from her own grandmother were also etched in her and, when a I was a teen, if she spotted me lingering in front of a mirror for a bit longer than necessary, she would say:

‘La bellezza viene e va. Quel che resta Γ¨ la bontΓ .’ (Lit. ‘Beauty comes and goes. What stays is kindness.’)

May your day be full of kindness, yours and that of those around you. x

  3. If only ‘celebrities’ obsessed with cosmetic surgery procedures would realise this. Constantly trying to stay young ends up making you look ugly – inside AND out x
